About these novels the specialized critic has commented:

Avilés Fabila is a writer that knows in what world he/she lives, it is evidently convinced that it is necessary to change it, and that brilliant cruelty that exercises writing demonstrates that concientemente wants that its literature is an instrument of that change

Bernardo Verbitzky

The pure idea in that René's novel Avilés Fabila is based published recently in Buenos Aires: The great solitary of the Palace, he/she has made me think, in the terms of the diverse opinion circumstances in that I have begun to make it, in a sinnúmero of things related with the identity.

... Especially The great solitary of the Palace, in which find a great accusation force, an extraordinary game of humor and irony, an interesting novelty of style and of structure

Giuseppe Bellini

... René is direct in the language and aggressive in his form of saying the things. All its work has been a permanent combat against the imposture, against the intelligentsia that he/she rejects the social fights because it is unable to see in them another thing that pollutants of its art "immaculate". René Avilés accuses, it points out guilty, it denounces with furious passion the dirt and the bestiality that dirty our social life.

Humberto Musacchio

The sense of humor is the characteristic that is evidenced of inmdiato in the work of Avilés Fabila. If the reader cultivates a minimum of bibliographical interest, he will be able to realize that the first edition of The games (1967) it is author's edition and that his second novel, The great solitary of the Palace (1971), it was published in Buenos Aires. The association of these phenomena is not accidental since the humorism of Avilés Fabila is pungent and he/she knows how to use it to satirize the cultural life and politics of its country

John S. Brushwood

... In their book, Avilés Fabila points out, without prurituses neither disquisiciones, with the necessary crudeness, the tortures, the confinamientos, the inquisitorial persecutions, the murders of the youths that dared to challenge the strong established structures, defended by a temporary commander and looked after a political party that, together with the commander, for fifty years he/she stays in the power: the Party of the Triumphant Revolution....

Antonio Caram

In The great solitary of the Palace  - and this is the aspect where Avilés Fabila is shown so owner of the poetic narration as of the irony - there are scenes that we all remember, of violence, of desperation, of impotence. Because to forget them, to take them like a "nightmare" of the one that have wakened up already, it would be to ignore that product of a reality that demands satisfaction to its most urgent problems were. In these scenes the violence of its feather, its ability is shown to manage the prose in such a way that of her emerja the pain without that same pain swallows it to him with superfluous descriptions.

José Joaquín Blanco

The great alonely of Palace, for many the best novel on the 68, possesses big literary and testimonial merits that resist the tests of the time and of the space. This work, fundamental for our narrative, it doesn't only try on the student movement and the massacre of Tlatelolco, but rather it is a recount of the contemporary Mexico that well can go of the times from the general Cárdenas to the moment in that the PRI loses the presidency in the 2000.

Conceived as a wide mural, The great solitary of the Palace is an allegory that intertwines several histories. The axis is late the fatidical one of October 2 in Tlatelolco. Through their characters the reader can recognize the most characteristic features in the reality just as it was lived. In an end, idealistic youths facing a régime, in the other one, that régime embodied in an authoritarian and intolerant man; a man sexenal totally only because of their excessive one to be able to.

Of the novel, translated to several languages, he/she has been in charge of the specialized critic thoroughly. Giuseppe Bellini recognizes in The great solitary of the Palace"a great accusation force, an extraordinary game of humor and irony, an interesting novelty of style and of structure". René Avilés Fabila was able to write a classic, a lasting work thanks to its mixture of reality and fantasy as well as to its author's critical capacity.
